First Semester
Literature focus: short story, essays, poetry and drama, comparison essay, interpretive essay (novel of student’s choice).
Language skills: modifiers, verb usage, punctuation, adverb clauses, coordinating conjunctions, metaphor, simile, diction, dialect, paraphrasing, transition. Writing process: plan, draft, revise, edit, proof, and publish. Speaking: ideas and content, organization, language, delivery of a persuasive speech.

ENG2 Freshman English
Second Semester
Language skills: verb usage, punctuation, capitalization, adjective clauses, sentence fluency, parallel structure, connotation, euphemisms, homonyms, metaphor, simile, analogies, sensory details, collage.
Writing process: plan, draft, revise, edit proof, and publish. Speaking: ideas and content, organization, language, delivery of an original poem.

ENG3 Tenth Grade
Grammar and Composition
First-semester English course.
Topics: the writing process; expository, persuasive, narrative, and descriptive form; business letters; strengthened writing mechanics; library and dictionary skills.
½ credit, 9 assignments, 1 exam
ENG4 Tenth Grade Literature
Second-semester English course.
Topics: poetry form (lyric, narrative, dramatic, meter, rhyme) and figurative language (paradox, simile, metaphor, personification, tone, symbols, motif, device); the types and parts of short story, drama (Julius Caesar), novel (The Bridge of San Luis Rey), and essay (fiction, nonfiction, style, setting, point of view, plot, theme, character, satire, irony, tone)

ENG13 Corrective English
One-semester English grammar course.
Topics: grammar, sentence building, correct usage, and punctuation.
½ credit, 8 assignments, 1 exam
ENG14 Business English
One-semester course.
Topic: The fundamentals of standard English usage required for success in the business world, with emphasis on writing effective business letters: letter form, persuasive request letters, claim and adjustment letters, sales letters, and employment letters.
½ credit, 12 assignments, 2 exams
ENG15 English Review
One-semester course.
Topics: review of the rules of standard English usage, grammar terms, capitalization, punctuation, vocabulary, sentence structure, and paragraph writing; comparison and contrast, persuasive, and narrative expository writing; business letters. Prior study of course topics is essential.
